Silverette - The Silver Bullet for Nursing Mothers

It was 3 a.m. and I was wide awake with a fever, muscle aches, and rock hard, sore boobs, the all too familiar symptoms of mastitis.  I was still dealing with a painful, lingering case of nipple thrush, and another round of mastitis was the last thing I needed. After months of feeding issues with my newborn son, I was at wits end for how to save our breastfeeding relationship (and my sanity.)  I didn't yet know that my son's tongue tie was the root cause of these issues, and so I spent another sleepless night typing random search terms into Google to try and find some silver bullet for how to treat my nipple pain and relentless infections.

Odds are, if you're reading this, you're in a similar situation, and oh mama do I ever feel for you. But I'm writing this to tell you that help is on the way! That night during my feverish Google searching I stumbled across Silverettes, the silver bullet (pun absolutely intended) I was hoping for. Within a day or two of wearing them I finally found relief for the months of thrush, mastitis, and sore, cracked nipples that had almost sabotaged my breastfeeding journey.  One year later and I still swear by my Silverettes, and when we launched Positive Partum I knew we had to carry them in the shop.

So what are they?

Silverettes are small cups crafted out of pure 925 silver that fit over and help to protect nipples while breastfeeding. Silver is a natural antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial metal that also contains anti-inflammatory agents. It heals and prevents cuts, wounds, cracks, soreness, and infections.  After nursing, place a drop of breastmilk in the cup, place over your areola, and wear them inside your bra and forget about them. No more sticky nipple ointments or salves, no pills or antifungal creams, no reapplication needed every few hours, just pop on these shiny little cups and you're good to go.

Since 2002, Silverette cups have enjoyed a resounding and growing success with mothers, doctors and obstetricians. They are the only and original nursing cups made in Italy by fully licensed silversmiths. These cups are essential for anyone who wants to prevent or who is experiencing issues with sore, cracked nursing nipples. Silverette cups are easy and comfortable to use – and no additional creams or lotions are necessary.

The patented anatomical shape of Silverettes has been tested to fit any nipple size without compressing it. The rounded apex and shape let air circulate, and the edges are refolded by hand to avoid any pinching or pain. These cups are the lightest cups available, and are so comfortable you will forget you're wearing them. Silverette cups have been clinically tested in a hospital in Padua, Italy for two years before being sold to the public, and now recommended by countless mothers, lactation consultants, and doctors alike.

Unlike nipple creams and ointments, Silverettes never expire and they never run out, so they're easy to reuse for years to come.  They won't glue your nipples to your bra, either!  Just place a few drops of breastmilk in each cups after a feeding session and pop them on your nipples under your nursing bra; the bra will hold them in place.  The only downside I have found to using Silverettes is that they make you look a bit like an Austin Powers Fembot, but that is a price I am willing to pay for pain-free nipples! Wear them with breast pads and a nursing bra over top and they're barely noticeable.

I am delighted to report that since purchasing Silverettes, I have had no more cases of thrush or mastitis, and I know that is no coincidence. I still use them from time to time, whenever my teething baby is feeling especially chompy. I know these little cups are responsible for salvaging my breastfeeding journey, and I can't recommend them enough to other moms who are struggling with breast infections and nipple pain.

In short, they are indeed the silver bullet for nursing moms.  I know that for any future children I may have, these will be the first thing I pack in my hospital bag.  Do your boobs a favor and pick up your pair of Silverettes here.
